LUCENT CHOOSES CERTICOM TO PROVIDE ADVANCED SECURITY FOR WIRELESS NETWORK PRODUCTS

Certicom Provides Lucent Technologies with Security Components to Enhance AAA Offering for WLAN and 3G Networks

CTIA WIRELESS, ORLANDO, FL, March 20, 2002 - Certicom (NASDAQ: CERT; TSE: CIC), a leading provider of mobile e-business security, today announced a license agreement with Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) to provide advanced security solutions for Lucent's NavisRadius™ Authentication, Authorization, Accounting (AAA) servers. Certicom's Java SSL Plus™ and Trustpoint™ toolkits will provide enhanced security for Lucent's NavisRadius family of products, which provides companies with cost-effective tools to smooth the integration of new and existing authentication options for 802.11 wireless network services.

Lucent Technologies' NavisRadius has long been the leader for dial-up connections over the wired infrastructure where username and password security is often sufficient. Today, NavisRadius is maintaining that lead within 802.11 and 3G networks, which are more susceptible to eavesdropping and masquerade. As a result, service providers are demanding support for more advanced security protocols. These protocols provide strong authentication to prevent attacks, and provide encryption keys to communicating parties that can be used to encrypt sessions and prevent eavesdropping. When strong authentication is combined with the flexibility of the unique NavisRadius PolicyFlow scripting language and multi-threaded architecture, the result is an unsurpassed level of security, flexibility and performance.

"AAA security is facing new challenges from application environments which have a variety of new security requirements," said Mike Iandolo, vice president of product management and marketing, Lucent Technologies Mobility Solutions Group. "We selected Certicom because its unsurpassed security for WLAN connectivity permits easy WLAN deployment across the enterprise."

Lucent selected Certicom's SSL Plus and Trustpoint toolkits to provide developers with a comprehensive line of tools for the integration of encryption algorithms and public-key infrastructure (PKI) functionality into its leading AAA servers. Certicom's products support a broad range of encryption algorithms, including Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), the algorithm best suited to wireless device constraints, and RSA, which allows interoperability with legacy applications. By utilizing Certicom's leading security solutions, Lucent's AAA products can support advanced PKI security designed specifically for wireless applications, while also providing the mechanisms needed to support wired applications.

"Enterprises are excited by the increased freedom and productivity that wireless solutions can provide, however, security and manageability rank among their top concerns," said Simon Blake-Wilson, director of New Business Development, Certicom. "Together, Lucent Technologies and Certicom are committed to supporting the needs of the enterprise by providing secure access solutions that are user-friendly and easy to deploy."

Certicom's Java SSL Plus provides for plug-and-play EAP-TLS integration, enabling developers to add enhanced authentication functionality to their networked applications rapidly and with confidence. Trustpoint facilitates application development, cutting the time-to-market for implementing PKI-enabled applications for wireless networks. A standards-based toolkit, Trustpoint allows enterprises to rapidly develop certificate-based applications to support authentication, authorization, confidentiality, privacy, and non-repudiation.
