CERTICOM LAUNCHES INDUSTRY’S FIRST WIRELESS VPN CLIENT TO SUPPORT AES AND DIGITAL CERTIFICATES

movianVPN 3.0 enables enterprises to easily deploy enhanced security to wireless devices without compromising performance

Mississauga, Ontario – (October 16, 2002) – Certicom Corporation (TSX: CIC), a leading provider of wireless security solutions, today announced the availability of movianVPN 3.0, the industry’s first VPN client for handhelds to support the advanced encryption standard (AES) algorithm and digital certificates for authentication. Certicom’s movianVPN 3.0 gives mobile users the ability to secure sensitive information with the highest level of security, without compromising the speed and flexibility of wireless devices.

“Certicom’s ability to support the most advanced Windows Powered wireless security, including AES and digital certificates, without impacting performance is a milestone in wireless computing,” said Mary Rose Becker, group marketing manager for the Mobile Device Division at Microsoft Corp. “At a time when security is receiving critical attention, Certicom has taken an industry lead in wireless VPN solutions.”

The productivity of a mobile workforce relies upon its ability to securely access business applications and communicate proprietary information from anywhere, anytime. movianVPN allows companies to extend critical enterprise applications such as e-mail and customer resource management (CRM) tools to mobile professionals by enabling handheld devices to connect to corporate VPN gateways for secure wireless access.

To ease the implementation pains for administrators working with large deployments, Certicom has also developed movian DeploymentManager (movianDM) to be used with movianVPN to generate and distribute VPN policy. movianDM also provides administrators with improved policy control so they can lock down configuration options to minimize user errors and lower help desk costs.

“Our support of AES encryption and digital certificates helps fulfill an immediate need in the marketplace and positions Certicom as a leader in wireless security solutions,” says Ian McKinnon, president and CEO of Certicom. “The enhancements offered by Certicom’s latest version of movianVPN raise the bar for wireless VPNs and are key to delivering an optimal user experience on handhelds, while supporting the strongest security possible.”
movianVPN version 3.0 adds the following functionality:

  • Support for PKI authentication with X.509 certificates
  • Support for AES
  • Improved connection awareness
  • Simplified dial-up networking connection
  • Support for movianDM

To fit with a wider range of deployment scenarios, movianVPN 3.0 expands the industry’s most comprehensive gateway support (over 12 gateway platforms) with the addition of the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall VPN and Cylink Nethawk VPN Gateway. It also increases the extensive support for different devices and connectivity by adding NetGear (802.11 compact flash card), Samsung i300 (smart phone), and Handspring Trio (smart phone).

movianVPN 3.0 and movianDM are available immediately with pricing determined by the number of seats.
