WIRELESS INNOVATORS TURN TO CERTICOM FOR SECURITY SOFTWARE

Four New Licensing Agreements with Motient, Visto, ThinAirApps and Mobile Airwaves Demonstrate Crucial Role of Certicom Security Technology that is Designed for the Bandwidth Constraints of Wireless Applications

HAYWARD, Calif., September 4, 2001 - Certicom, (Nasdaq: CERT; TSE: CIC), today announced four new license agreements that further reinforce its role as a leading enabler of the emerging wireless applications market. Certicom's security software for wireless applications has been licensed to Motient Corporation (Nasdaq: MTNT), Visto, ThinAirApps, Inc., and Mobile Airwaves Inc.

"These companies represent the new wave of wireless computing and communications that will literally put information directly into the hands of business users and consumers when and where they need it," said Prakash Panjwani, vice president of business development for Certicom. "Innovative application developers have recognized Certicom as the leading provider of trusted security solutions tailored to meet the challenges posed by the constraints of the wireless environment."

Wireless application development is progressing rapidly. Market research firm Evans Data Corp. recently announced in its "Summer 2001 Wireless Developer Survey" that 60% of application developers surveyed plan wireless application deployment in the next six months.

The new Certicom licensees are all forging innovative solutions with core Certicom security technology:

"Security is the key concern of enterprise IT when they are evaluating the impact of equipping their employees with wireless and mobile access to corporate data behind the firewall," said Renee Niemi, Visto senior vice president of marketing. "To address this critical issue, Visto has chosen to partner with Certicom because they are the leader in mobile security technology."

These innovative companies will use Certicom's trusted Security Builder® cryptographic toolkit and WTLS Plus™ (Wireless Transport Layer Security) solution to build advanced security into their Internet e-business solutions and wireless offerings.

Certicom's security technology solutions are tailored to the unique requirements of the wireless environment, where, unlike desktop-only solutions, applications require a very compact code size due to bandwidth limitations and memory and processor requirements of mobile devices.

Incorporating powerful elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) technology, Certicom's Security Builder enables strong, scaleable security for virtually every piece of the computing infrastructure. Certicom's industry-standard WTLS Plus enables developers to secure wireless e-commerce and enterprise solutions over multiple wireless networks and devices and across WAP, GSM and smart card technologies.

"Our enterprise customers demand convenience, security, and extensibility from our Aqivo wireless information server," said Steve Landman, CEO of Mobile Airwaves, Inc. "Certicom's technology is a key element of our solution today and in the future."
